The Budget HL 5050 Toner

The Brother HL 5050 printer is another winner from Brother. There are two things that are going in the right direction for this printer.

The first is its rather low prince tag which makes it affordable for almost every small office. The relatively small footprint which makes it easy to place and setup in tight congested work environments. This printer is capable of blazing fast print speeds and excellent quality monochrome print. Its network capability makes it easy to connect the printer to an existing home network or office network.

Out of the box I would say that this printer is a winner especially for those people who are looking for a bargain. This is a bargain size printer with lots of good printing ability. The text printed were surprisingly good and crisp.

The Brother HL 5050 arrives equipped with a 250 sheet tray fitted into its base. If you look in the front there is yet another tray that can hold another 50 sheets. The 50 sheet tray can either be used as a second tray or a tray to feed envelopes. You can even stack these high if you like. If you like printing envelopes this is a very handy feature.

I did notice however that there isn’t a rear exit available for the printer so chances are that the paper will be creased. This is probably a rare printer at this prince that has a built in duplexer. If you want to increase the paper holding capacity of this printer you can add two more trays. Each tray can hold up to around 250 sheets of paper each.

There is also a 150 sheet output bin and right besides that there is a control panel with two buttons. There area also four lights but an LCD screen is missing. However not having an LCD doesn’t make life difficult. It’s easy to input network parameters via the provided buttons. The booklet that comes along with the printer is colorful and well designed which makes attaching the printer easy. Troubleshooting is made easy by the guide provided in PDF format in the CD-Rom. This printer is very good at producing excellent quality text that is crisp with the HL 5050 Toner Cartridge. However you might notice a few strange effects in a few fonts. We tried printing out line art and found that the results were satisfactory. The ability of this printer to produce high quality text is what separates this printer from the rest in its price range.

Replacing the Brother HL 5050 Toner was as easy as pulling out the drum assembly. The drum assembly is located in the front of the printer. The printer comes pre-fitted with a standard capacity Brother HL 5050 printer toner which should last you for over 3000 pages. However you can save some money if you purchase a high capacity cartridge for an extra $100 which can print around 7000 pages.
